What is PLA (Prior Learning Assessment)?

Already know some of what a module covers? Prior learning assessment lets you show it up front, so you can move faster through familiar topics and spend more time on what’s new to you.

What is prior learning assessment?
It’s a set of multiple-choice questions at the start of each module. The questions cover topics in that module and give you a chance to show what you already know, whether you learned it at work, in earlier study or through life experience.

When will I see it?
At the start of every module, before you begin the module’s learning sessions.

What happens if I show I already know a topic?
You may be able to skip the learning sessions for that topic, such as videos or conversations with L.E. That frees up your time for the topics where you have the most to learn.

What if I don’t know a topic yet?
That’s completely fine, and it’s what the module is for. You’ll work through the learning sessions for that topic as usual.

What if I’m asked about tools I’ve used before?

Some questions may ask whether you already have an account for a tool or have used it before. Please answer honestly. If you say you’re already set up when you aren’t, you could miss important steps for getting that tool ready to use.

Why does the assessment get longer in later courses?

In later courses, the prior learning assessment also includes refresher questions on topics from earlier courses. These can make the assessment a little longer, but if you show you still remember a topic, you can skip its refresher sessions and keep moving.

Do I still have to complete practice activities?
Yes. Everyone still completes end-of-unit and end-of-module practice. These activities help further capture and define your competency, including in topics you skipped.
